Position Overview
The Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) is seeking high-achieving, well-connected human rights practitioners to coordinate our survey expansion and data uptake in the above-mentioned countries.
The ideal candidate is part of the civil society in their countries and is someone who wants their work to make a difference in the world. The successful applicant will be a great communicator and have an advanced appreciation of the difficulty and delicacy of this work and be savvy about using secure technology to communicate with people.**

What We Do
The Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) is a global collaborative project of academics and human rights advocates working to produce comprehensive, free, easy-to-access metrics tracking the human rights performance of countries around the world. We are working to improve the lives of people, by bringing more transparency to the performance of states and inspiring more ethical behaviour. All our data are published on our Rights Tracker.
We publish Economic and Social Rights data for 194 countries and Civil and Political Rights data for 39 countries – we are currently working towards global coverage for 13 different rights.
We are a global team with bases in New Zealand and the United States. Our Wellington team is around 3-5 people and hosted by Motu Economic and Public Policy Research. A not-for-profit and charitable trust, Motu is in both the top ten economic think tanks and top ten climate think tanks in the world.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Identify human rights practitioners knowledgeable about human rights in the respective countries and invite them to participate in HRMI online expert survey. Human rights practitioners are people who monitor events in the survey countries. They are usually human rights researchers, lawyers, or journalists. - Follow up with the survey registrants and encourage them to complete the annual survey between February and March.
- Ensure that HRMI’s data security policy is fully respected and provide ongoing suggestions for improvement as technology evolves and new threats emerge.
- Collaborate with members of the HRMI team who lead survey operations/respondent engagement as well as communications.
- Assist to proofread the survey and other communication materials if the local language is not English.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Well-connected to the human rights community in their respective countries. High awareness of cultural knowledge and sensitivity.
- High awareness of cyber threats, with good knowledge of data security and data protection.
- Trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Ability to converse in local dialects an advantage.
- Ability to build strong networks.

Commitment
This is a voluntary position. On average the HRMI Ambassadors spend about 1-2 hours per week between January and March on HRMI tasks.
